Classes and Workshops

The festival presents an extensive and inclusive set of classes and workshops to cover various aspects of Argentine Tango with Analía and Luis, as well as Dale Ellison from Charleston SC and Connecticut's own Gem Duras. Snacks will be served at the breaks. Singles are welcome, we change partners.

Boot Camp for Beginners

2.5 hours of instruction with Dale and Gem packed into this Saturday of intensive Argentine Tango. Limited enrollment.

2:30 - 5:00 pm, with a short break
Argentine Tango basics, embrace and connection. Next phase, pivots, ochos and turns. Free leg movements, combinations with ganchos hooking legs together

10:00 am: Fall onto your partner! Easy volcadas with close and open embrace.

11:15 am: Planeos and Sacadas
11:15 am: Creating tango elegance by drawing shapes on the floor, and combining them for sacadas for diverse dynamics and effects.

Day II: Nuevo Tango

Sunday, July 12

Full day, 4.5 hours of intensive tango instruction with guest instructor Dale Ellison and Gem Duras with workshops focusing on nuevo tango idioms.

1:00 pm: Share the axis with your partner to create thrilling effects for nuevo and classic tango.

2:30 pm: Single axis turns with ganchos
2:30 pm: Dynamics of turning with a shared axis, and combinations with nuevo style ganchos.

4:00 pm: Advanced Cadenas
4:00 pm: Combine colgadas and single axis turns from the previous workshops to create advanced chain walks.

Analía and Luis will present workshops addressing various aspects of tango in a fun environment. All tango dancers are welcome as well as beginners who have taken Dale and Gem's intensive workshops the previous weekend.

1:00 pm: The Tango Walk: Connection, Elegance & Presence
1:00 pm: A workshop focused on the foundation of Argentine tango: the walk, the embrace, posture, balance, and connection.

2:30 pm: Tango Salon: Flow, Navigation & Social Dance
2:30 pm: Changes of direction, turns, pauses, and how to move with elegance while respecting the line of dance.

4:00 pm: Milonga: Rhythm, Playfulness & Traspié
4:00 pm: Rhythm, quick weight changes, traspié, compact steps, and playful combinations for the dance floor.

Sunday, July 19

Analía and Luis will continue their teaching in Connecticut with three more workshops. All tango dancers with some experience are welcome.

1:00 pm: Tango Vals: Flow, Turns & Circular Musicality
1:00 pm: Circular movement, with 3/4 rhythm, suspension, and creating a smooth and elegant vals feeling.

2:30 pm: Orchestra vs. Orchestra: D’Arienzo vs. Di Sarli
2:30 pm: A comparison of the strong rhythmic drive of D’Arienzo with the elegance and melodic quality of Di Sarli. Applying the same movement to drastically different interpretations of these orchestras.

4:00 pm: Stage Tango, with the music of Pugliese
4:00 pm: Musical depth, drama, pauses, and emotional interpretation. How to dance Pugliese with intensity and suspension, for the stage or the social dance floor.

An exploration of turns and ocho cortado variations in cross system for vals in tight spaces.
